I’ve been using powdered laundry detergent for years, and it works fine! Look for products that are sold in recyclable boxes. Powder in plastic bags or containers makes no sense to me.
Brands found in most stores: Tide, Arm and Hammer, All, Gain, Surf, Seventh Generation (may or may not come in a box), Fab, 365. Other brands harder to find: Ariel, BioKleen, Charilie’s, Country Save, Bold, Persil, Health Ranger Select, Purex. Some have more harmful chemicals than others, but that is another story. Please comment on these and any others.
Tips: For Front Loading washers- if yours has a top detergent cup where you can see water running through- add the powder slowly, so it doesn’t clump. If using top loading washers, put the powder into the washer drum or down the center of the agitator before adding the clothes. Some say it’s best to fill your washer with water first, then add your detergent, then add your clothes. For troubleshooting, you may need to dissolve the required amount in cup of hot water and then add as you would a liquid. Experiment with your washer, after a few trials, I’m sure you’ll find the best way for you!
Packaging considerations: I’m not sure how many or if any boxes are made with recycled cardboard, but if you see that, please let us know! Sometimes, it’s a little tricky to get the plastic handle out, if there is one- get a brand without one, if available- otherwise, figure out a way to pull or cut it out without harming yourself (if you figure out a tick, let us know).
WHY? Think about this– what are you going to tell your children, grandchildren, neices, nephews, etc., when they ask why our generation didn’t do more to protect the planet? Will we say- ‘it was too hard, the powder didn’t dissolve easily, it cost too much (although maybe less?), everyone else was using liquid, I couldn’t make any difference by myself…’? wah, wah, wah…. Sorry, I get it, but it really becomes just as easy over time!
PLEASE respond with your tips, ideas, and experieinces.
Happy laundering! Barb
